Herbs to Repair & Rebuild from Lyme Disease
“Herbs are the cornerstone of Restorative Therapy.” – Dr. Bill Rawls
Herbs boost your body’s ability to heal itself. I work with a clinical herbalist to lower inflammation and support digestion. We are working to repair my gut, brain joints, oh heck my whole body. Herbs are a big part of my repair tool box. I go for organic whole herbs or tinctures.
Get the Help You Need to take herbs safely and effectively
Work with a Lyme literate herbalist and or a doctor who respects understands the power of plants. Have them set up an herbal protocol based on your specific needs. Keep your team in the loop on what you are taking. Most herbs are quite safe, but it makes sense to have your health care team check for potential side effects and drug interactions.
Rebuilding health from Lyme can be a long process. Historically, people have eaten many of these plants as food with no ill effects. That kind of safety profile makes me much more comfortable taking herbs over the long term. I was on antibiotics for a couple of years, but had to stop when the damage to my digestion and liver over road any benefit.
Herbs are fabulous functional foods. They often have multiple benefits and inherent protective or balancing properties in how they work. In general they act more subtly and slowly than targeted pharmaceuticals.
My Go to Herbs to Repair & Rebuild from Lyme Disease
- Sarsaparilla helps the body remove endotoxins and escort them out in your urine and feces. It is a blood cleanser and helps balance immune response and lower inflammation. A side benefit is it tastes good.
- Mushrooms work on rebuilding your biome and refining your immune response. They promote the growth of healthy bacteria in your gut. I take a combination pill that includes, Reishi, Cordyceps, Chaga, Lions Mane and Turkey Tail.
- Milk Thistle is a key herb for liver health and support. It helps the liver deal with the waste and debris from tissue damage and pathogen die off.
- Turmeric is one fabulous root. There is an growing body of clinical research siting the multiple benefits of turmeric. I use turmeric for its lower inflammation and protect against cancer.
- Bacopa and Gotu Kola help the brain. Both of these herbs pass the blood brain barrier, reduce brain inflammation and support neurotransmitter function impaired by Lyme Disease. Together they work to enhance thinking and memory.
Why Whole Herb?
A lot of plants have specific actives like curcumin in turmeric that have been studied in scientifically. I still take whole plant or whole plant extracts. We don’t understand what all the active components in the plant do. But all the actions of the whole plant are important.
The body understands how to digest and use whole plants. I have a relationship with these herbs, I have been taking them off and on for 5 years. Herbs help repair & rebuild from Lyme disease in important ways. I feel the effects of some right away. Others rebuild and support below the level of my awareness.
Many Lyme doctors and patients use to herbs to support and repair after the infection is under control. The infections from Lyme and co-infections cause a lot of damage. Repairing this damage is necessary to heal.
If you still don’t feel good and your doctor has run out of options do something. Consider working with an Ayurvedic Practitioner or herbalist who has experience rebuilding and repairing the damage from tick borne illnesses with plants. Keep your doctor active in the communication loop.
