Invest in Good Sunglasses

Polarized lenses are great to cut down glare while driving or in an office with bright florescent lights or the glare at the beach.  This seems simple but can really make a difference.

Eye Exercises

A couple of times a day take 20 seconds and look at something like a tree or the sky that is at least 20 feet away, farther is even better. Then look up, down, to the right and left.  Then look up and to the right, up and to the left, and down and to the right down and to the left, without moving your head.  These actions exercise the muscles around your eyes.

If you have trouble adding this to your routine, get an app on your computer or phone to trigger you to do simple eye exercises like eye rolling. The first couple of times it feels a little funny. After that it feels totally natural and even welcome when you see the app pop up.

These tools teach you to relax your eyes on a regular schedule with minimal disruption to your work and life. Over time this adds up to build a buffer against inflammation and fatigue. Eyeleo, is one I use. Here is a link with some more options.

Eye Circles

This is great to do before bed. Place a few drops of organic castor oil on the tip of your pinky finger. Slowly circle your finger tip from up under your eyebrow around the outer eye and back under the eye. Follow the orbital socket the bone around the eye. Use a very light, pressure.  Repeat 5 to 10 circles for each eye. Take care not to poke your eye.

Eye circles will help move lymph out of the eye area. Stagnant lymph is a issue for eye inflammation and fatigue in general, but also lyme visual symptoms.  If you get the oil in your eye it might blur your vision for a little while.  So don’t use oil near your eye before driving or any activity that requires sharp vision

Listen to Learn

Audio books and podcasts are the bomb. They give your eyes a break and build listening skill. Podcasts keep me engaged with my learning community. Audio books are great for long lines at the market, at the eye doctors or for company on a walk. I especially use audio books in the car when driving, so I keep my eyes on the road. Click this link to get some audio app options.

Affirmations

Close your eyes and relax, meditate in silence or silently speak an affirmation.  “My vision is sharp and clear my view of the world is bright and beautiful.  Or use the affirmation to still mind chatter any time.  Use words that you connect to and make you feel hopeful.

Add Nutrient Dense Foods to Support Eye Health

Your eyes need support to fight damage from Lyme disease. Eyes love healthy fats and antioxidants.  Leafy greens, blue and blackberries contain antioxidants, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Astaxanthin, that directly support eye health and repair. Hyuralonic acid and saffron also support eye health. Click this link for more food ideas.

Aloe Vera

Aloe is cooling and will help balance inflammation in the eye. Do not put aloe vera directly in your eyes.  Moisten a cotton pad with aloe vera. You want it wet but not dripping, so wring it out if it is too wet. Lie down, or sit and lean back, so your face is up and back. Place moist pads over closed eyes, and escape for a few moments of relaxation.
