Gift season is here again! I often try to give experience or learning gifts.  I made dream board kits for all my nieces and nephews last year. This year is Gift Organic!  Organic clothing is a functional learning experience. In the past I have purchased organic clothes for baby showers. I really believe in lightening the toxic load on infants and babies.

Many people eat organic food and drink clean water. The EWG “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean 15” lists have given people a great way to prioritize their organic spending. A whole industry moved to create containers made of glass or metal to get rid of the hormone disrupting chemicals found in plastic water bottles. There are lines of personal care and make up products that are carefully constructed to work without toxins.

We all need to consider how what we wear and sleep in contribute to the toxic loading our body is exposed to. Maybe we need clean options for our linens and clothes as well.  Gifting organic is a great way to spread this message.

We cover our skin with our clothes. Our skin is the largest organ of the body.  Our skin biome is part of our outer immune system, that protects us from attack. Skin actively moves toxins out of our bodies in our sweat. But chemicals also come in through the skin.

Place low toxin choices next to our and our loved ones skin. What a wonderful gift!

What are the best fabric options to have around?

Natural organic fiber cloth with natural organic dye or no dye is best.

Some more considerations include wearing Natural Fibers, versus synthetic fabrics. Natural fibers breathe. Cotton, linen, hemp, silk and wool are fabrics that start from a living plant or animal.

Acrylic and Polyester are chemically created and processed from pellets to fibers to fabric to wearable. There are potential environmental and health effects from the chemistry. Synthetics including Acrylic, Polyester, nylon and rayon may be less desirable in terms of chemical exposure.

Fire retardant, shrink proof, wrinkle free & the fabrics that are glow in the dark are chemically treated to achieve each effect. From formaldehyde to endocrine disruptors the list of toxins associated with synthetic and treated fabrics goes on and on. At a minimum always wash new clothing before wearing.

Does all this matter to your health? It may well. Here are some situations to gift organic clothing and linens.

6 situations to gift organic!

My most important times to stretch and go for organic and natural fiber.

  1. Everything Infant. Diapers, spit clothes onesies, sheets towels, as much as you can. An infant is not set up to do heavy detox.   So this is an investment that can pay it forward.
  2. Young children’s underwear and clothes.
  3. Adult Underwear.
  4. Night wear. Your body is trying to detox, you don’t want to be adding toxins in.
  5. Sheets   See 4.
  6. Folks, with cancer, autoimmunity, or other chronic illness. These people can benefit getting rid toxic loading to support liver function.

You can find organic options now on line or in some big box stores. So buying organic for a new baby’s holiday season or organic sheets for a gift for the people in your community may just be the loving thing to do.
