Our Organic CSA had Snap Peas and shell peas for picking this week. This is one of my favorite weeks of the summer and fear of ticks was not going to stop me getting out there to enjoy myself. There is so much snap and flavor in fresh peas, I start to drool at the thought.
When I saw where they were I almost aborted picking. I generally won’t wade through high grass to get to the plants or period, but I was dressed, had natural repellent in the car and the call of the peas was stronger than my tick fears.
Hat on, sprayed, pants tucked into my socks, I walked into the field. The day and the peas were ripe, lush perfect. An afternoon of communing with nature picking organic peas is very healing for me. I don’t want to give that up because of fear of ticks and tick borne infections. So I face my fear and take precautions.
After picking we checked ourselves for ticks. My friend brought her dog, so she got checked too. We found 2 ticks, disposed of them and went home to cook and consume. She and I sat around the kitchen table shelling peas, remembering how we used to do stuff like that at our mother’s tables. Sweet memories of days gone buy.
Within a few hours of picking the peas we were sitting at the dinner table enjoying them. I honestly don’t know how to convey how good they were, the bright color, depth of flavor and perfect texture. So let just say they were most delicious. The pleasure and health benefits of eating really fresh food cannot be denied.
