I was on a plane the other day and started reading the inflight magazine. An ad for a laser cap to regrow hair for $800 dollars started me thinking about my Lyme hair loss. When I was really sick and inflamed my hair fell out in droves. It was not painful or life threatening but in the moment a total bummer. Lyme is a roller coaster ride of symptoms.
Each day with Lyme disease is a learning experience. Do you see hair on the pillow, comb and in the shower…. Hair loss may be part of the journey with Lyme disease. You never know what you are going to have to deal with from a symptom standpoint. My experience and recovery has taught me to address issues as they come up. Many Lyme symptoms are scary and dangerous, like heart problems and paralysis and others like breaking nails and hair loss are just disheartening.
No one is going to die from hair loss, but as a women it just made me feel unattractive and bad. Pain and swelling, people see that and know you are sick, but Lyme hair loss? Sometimes the guy in front of you at the supermarket, just sees unfeminine and ugly. I felt the judgement and the shame.
I am a firm believer in taking action to help yourself when you can, so I did some research on how to help my hair health.
There are many reasons that women can suffer from hair loss and a whole group of them flow out of the problems from Lyme disease. If hair loss coincident with Lyme disease bothers you take action. Talk with a Lyme literate doc or a member of your health care team and get to the bottom of your hair loss. Not all hair loss it permanent. Understanding the cause might just lead you to a simple solution.
Main causes that contributed to my Lyme hair loss.
- Mineral Deficiencies – I was low in iron and magnesium.
- B Vitamin Deficiency – Turns out I have genetic issues processing B vitamins into form my body can use directly.
- Hormone Disruption – Tests show my hormones are really low.
- Autoimmunity – Chronic Lyme with joint and Nervous system involvement.
- Physical Stress –
- Drugs – Blood Pressure Medicine, Antibiotics… Check with the doctor on whether the meds you are on contribute to hair loss and discuss options.
- Toxicity Build Up –With chronic illness you stress your liver and ability to move toxins out. Add die off and it is easy to get overloaded.
Thyroid issues are another factor that can contribute to hair loss from Lyme disease. ( So far so good on my thyroid.)
Addressing these factors helped my health and my hair, so I had nothing to lose. I want to help my body and my hair be as healthy as possible.
