Popped Sorghum

Popped Sorghum you say.  Not so sure about that, but I decided to give it a try.  Found it at the GF&AF Expo.  I don’t generally eat a whole lot of processed foods, I kind to like to keep things simple and local.

So why did go to the GF&AF expo? I went to have fun and to find out about new options in food that surprise me with their creativity and taste.    I want to know how industry is addressing this evolving market need. Get to know some  of the folks in your neighborhood who are doing something new and different by eating clean. Identify local companies working to keep ingredient lists low and allergen free without sacrificing flavor and fun.  This is one way to keep food healthy and interesting.

I want to share a really fun different company I came across with a product that can slide into the holes in your diet that getting free of allergens can cause.  Pop IQ Popped Sorghum is my summer food find.

Corn left my diet sometime ago, because it causes an inflammation response in me and is genetically modified in many varieties.  Do you miss corn chips and pop corn. I do. You can’t live on corn chips or pop corn, we all need more nutrients than they provide, but once in a while… Popcorn is a fun food to nibble and enjoy.

The dish on sorghum

How about popped sorghum?  Sorghum is a cereal grain grown in the southwest.  It is traditionally used as a inexpensive sugar substitute.  Sorghum Syrup tastes like molasses with its own twist. Here is a YouTube link on making sorghum syrup.  It looks similar to making sugar from sugar cane, without the burning.

Nowadays you see sorghum used in more and different ways.  Sorghum is popular in salads and soups.. It is also popped as a snack food.   Have you ever heard of this? I will betray my New England roots and say not only had I not heard of popped sorghum, I hadn’t heard of sorghum at all.    Here is a link with some sorghum info and recipes.    I am going to try it in a salad soon.

Popped Sorghum for Snackin

Atlantic New England  is a company that makes popped sorghum. PopIQ is their brand.  They had a booth at the expo. Here is a link for their website.  They were handing out samples of popped sorghum to try. Good eats, small popped kernels with no bits to stick in your teeth.  A few different flavors, I stuck with the basic and I went back for a second sample.  It is a clean product with less than 5 ingredients on the label.  Yum!  Put  some in the cabinet for movie night.  ANE company is based in Norwood, MA so local to me and mine.

Find fun food that is healthy where you can.   The world is full of creative ways to enhance health and enjoyment.  Don’t let boredom trap you into unhealthy food choices.  What is your food find  or new favorite recipe for this summer?  Reach out and share the enjoyment.
